Fundo Memorial Cláudia Sousa para o Avanço da Primatologia e das Ciências da Vida Selvagem em Portugal

O presente fundo, estabelecido pela equipa internacional de investigação de Bossou-Nimba, tem como principal objetivo a continuação da visão e missão de Cláudia Sousa de encorajar e inspirar o estudo da Primatologia e das Ciências da Vida Selvagem entre os estudantes portugueses. Para tal, um candidato por ano irá ser selecionado. As inscrições destinam-se a estudantes de licenciatura, mestrado ou doutoramento de nacionalidade Portuguesa, que tenham sido inspirados pela carreira de Cláudia Sousa, e com interesse em seguir uma carreira na área de Primatologia e das Ciências da Vida Selvagem.

Claudia Sousa Memorial Fund for the Advancement of Portuguese Primatology and Wildlife Sciences

The objective of this fund, established by the Bossou and Nimba Research team, is to continue Claudia Sousa’s vision to encourage and inspire Primatological and Wildlife studies by Portuguese students. One applicant per year will be selected. Applications are invited from Undergraduate, Masters and PhD students of Portuguese nationality who have been inspired by Claudia and her work and wish to pursue a career in Primatology and Wildlife Sciences.

Duração da bolsa: Em homenagem ao histórico de investigação da Cláudia no Primate Research Institute, no Japão, o fundo irá cobrir as despesas (incluindo viagem, alojamento, estipêndio) a um(a) estudante no início de carreira, de forma a que ele(a) possa permanecer no Primate Research Institute e Wildlife Research Centre (WRC), no Japão. O estudante deverá participar em atividades de investigação e seminários onde terá a oportunidade de aprender e desenvolver o seu interesse pela Primatologia e pelas Ciências da Vida Selvagem. O período de estadia no Japão deverá ser de um a três meses entre 1 de abril de 2020 e 15 de março de 2021, correspondente ao ano letivo japonês.

Data de submissão das inscrições: A data limite para a submissão das inscrições é dia 13 de março de 2020, sexta-feira até às 16 horas de Portugal. Inscrições submetidas após essa data não serão consideradas para avaliação. Os candidatos serão notificados com a decisão final até sábado, dia 21 de março de 2020.

Método de submissão: As inscrições deverão ser submetidas via email para a Dra. Kimberley J Hockings, tendo como título (no campo para o assunto): “Claudia Sousa Memorial Fund Application: APELIDO DO CANDIDATO”. O ficheiro anexado deverá estar em formato de PDF, e ser escrito exclusivamente em inglês.

Elegibilidade: Os candidatos deverão ser estudantes de licenciatura, mestrado ou doutoramento (ou entre os programas) de nacionalidade Portuguesa com especialização em Primatologia ou Ciências da Vida Selvagem e/ou áreas relacionadas (ex: Antropologia, Psicologia, Zoologia, Conservação, Genética, etc). Os candidatos deverão ter autorização do seu orientador/responsável pelo curso para se deslocarem de Portugal até ao Japão.

Award information

Duration of grant: In honour of Claudia's research history at the Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University, Japan, the Fund will cover expenses (including travel, accommodation, stipend) for one early career student to spend between one and three months at the Primate Research Institute and Wildlife Research Center (WRC) in Japan. The student will be expected to learn from, and take part in, research activities and seminars and to develop their passion for Primatology and/or wildlife sciences. The period of stay in Japan must between 1 and 3 months, and fall between 1^st April 2020 and 15^th March 2021.

Closing Date, 2020 Round: The closing date for applications is March 13^th 2020 at 4pm (Portuguese time). Submissions received after this deadline will not be considered. Applicants will be notified of the decision by Saturday 21^st March 2020.

Method of application: Full applications must be submitted via email to Dr Kimberley J Hockings at with the heading “Claudia Sousa Memorial Fund Application: APPLICANT’S SURNAME”. A PDF document in English should be attached to the email.

Eligibility: The applicant must be an Undergraduate, Master's or PhD student (or between programmes) of Portuguese nationality with specialisation in Primatology or Wildlife Sciences and/or a related discipline (e.g. Anthropology, Psychology, Zoology, Biology, Conservation Science, Genetics, etc.). The applicant must have permission from their course leader/supervisor to leave Portugal for Japan.

O elemento de maior relevância da inscrição consiste na elaboração de um texto (1000 palavras como limite) detalhando as contribuições da Cláudia Sousa para a área de Primatologia, incluindo a sua investigação em chimpanzés, em cativeiro e no estado selvagem, e de como a Cláudia inspirou o candidato a seguir uma carreira em Primatologia e/ou Ciências da Vida Selvagem. No topo do documento, deverá constar o nome do candidato e a sua afiliação, a fase da sua carreira (licenciatura, mestrado ou doutoramento), a data proposta para o começo e a duração da estadia no Japão. Alterações nas datas não são permitidas após a submissão da inscrição.

Applicants should attach one PDF file that consists of two parts:

The main part of the application comprises a written piece (1000 word limit) detailing the contributions Claudia Sousa has made to the field of Primatology, including her research on captive and wild chimpanzees, and how Claudia and her work has inspired the applicant to pursue a career in Primatology and/or wildlife sciences. At the top of the application, the applicant should clearly state their name and affiliation, career stage (Undergraduate, Master's, PhD), proposed start date and the duration they intend to stay in Japan. These should not be changed after the application.

Applicants should attach an up-to-date CV which clearly outlines their career stage and progression, and includes the name of two referees who know the applicant well. Please include the affiliation and e-mail address of each referee.

In honour of Dr Claudia Sousa, we share these videos to perpetuate her achievement in Primatology in Japan and Bossou, Guinea.

How do chimpanzees understand and use tokens? 2 min 2 sec long A touch-panel presents a chimpanzee named Ai with a cognitive test. For each correct answer a coin is given. At another side there is a vending machine. Ai obtains a preferred food item after inserting the coin into the vending machine.

Outdoor laboratory to observe stone tool use 1 min 58 sec long At Bossou, Guinea, chimpanzees use a pair of stones to crack open oil palm nuts and eat the kernel inside. Researchers observe and record their behavior in an outdoor laboratory.

A novel nut experiment 1 min 46 sec long Coula nuts that are not available in the forest of Bossou were provided by researchers. A female used stone tools to crack them open like oil palm nuts and this behavior was transmitted to group mates.

Tool-use for drinking water 1 min 49 sec long Artificial holes in the tree trunk at the outdoor laboratory allow the study of chimpanzee drinking behavior. Chimpanzees fold piles of leaves and use them as a tool to drink water.

Using a token to obtain a key to get food 2 min 2 sec long A coin is given for each correct choice in a matching-to-sample test. By inserting coin into the vending machine the chimpanzee can select a food reward. At the end of the session the key appears as a choice. The chimpanzee selected the key to unlock a box and obtain a big reward from inside the box.

An infant chimpanzee's acquisition of token use 1 min 57 sec long A two-year-old chimpanzee named Ayumu learned the procedure of a cognitive test by observing his mother. After observing his mother Ayumu tried for months to use tokens, and finally succeeded to insert the coin and completed the task.

Biographical Note

Cláudia Sousa (1975 - 2014) investigated the behaviour and cognitive abilities of chimpanzees and other non-human primates. She conducted studies about the cognitive abilities of chimpanzees in captivity, at the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University, from where she got her doctoral degree. She was also heavily involved in projects concerning the conservation of chimpanzees and other non-human primates, and their interaction with local human populations. She conducted fieldwork at Bossou, Republic of Guinea, and in the south-western region of Republic of Guinea-Bissau. She was a Professor at the Department of Anthropology, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal) since 2001, a founding member and part of the current leadership at the Centre for Research in Anthropology (Lisboa, Portugal), and taught numerous courses within Biological Anthropology.
